The Mayor of Vienna was nominated "Honorary Ambassador of Greek Wines" in a special event that took place in the ambassadorial residence in Vienna, on 27 February 2008. The event was organized by the Greek Ambassador, Mr Panagiotis Zografos and the Greek Office for Economic and Commercial Affairs in Vienna, in collaboration with the Greek National Interprofessional Organization of Vine and Wine (E.D.O.A.O) and the “Wineacademy International Greece/Austria” house of wines.

The Mayor of Vienna, Mr. Michael Häupl, was nominated "Honorary Ambassador of Greek Wines" in a special event that took place in the ambassadorial residence in Vienna, on 27 February 2008. The event was organized by the Greek Ambassador, Mr Panagiotis Zografos and the Greek Office for Economic and Commercial Affairs in Vienna, in collaboration with the Greek National Interprofessional Organization of Vine and Wine (E.D.O.A.O) and the “Wineacademy International Greece/Austria” house of wines.

The event was supported by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Petros Doukas, and the Secretary-General for International Economic Relations and Development Cooperation, Mr. Theodore Skylakakis. The event took place under the Framework of Cooperation, that was signed by the General Secretariat of International Economic Relations and Development Cooperation and by the National Interprofessional Organization of Vine and Wine (E.D.O.A.O), in order to promote the extraversion of the Greek wine producers.

The event, which was covered by the Austrian National Television and Radio, was attended by 300 guests, among others high-ranking officials, many representatives of commercial agents as well as artists and journalists.

During his speech of thanks, Mr Häupl praised the top quality of the Greek viniculture, invited his compatriots to enrich their gustatory experiences with Greek wines and affirmed that he will contribute to further promoting the Greek wines in Austria.
During the event, 202 bottles by 36 brands of Greek producers were presented. The aforementioned products were highly appraised in respect of their quality, while the Austrian importers expressed their special interest  thereon.

On the occasion of the successful organization of the event in question, the Secretary-General for International Economic Relations and Development Cooperation Mr. Theodore Skylakakis stated: “In the framework of our cooperation with the E.D.O.A.O, we are strengthening our efforts to promote the extraversion of the Greek wine-producing companies. The successful event of Vienna and the nomination of the City’s Mayor, Mr Häupl, in “Honorary Ambassador for Greek Wines”, constitute the early steps of establishing Greek wine in the Austrian market and elevating Austrian consumers’ appreciation for Greek wine as a product of high gustatory value”.
